My children and I were homeless after escaping the abuse. We slept in our car, want "couch surfing" and bounced around before we wound up in The Family Place, a homeless shelter for families. The Shelter staff were not trained to deal with DV--I wasn't offered support or resources. No safety planning either. I had find help all on my own. Even worse, the staff had no knowledge on how to deal with traumatized children. My son had severe PTSD and would have fits of crying, sometimes he would repeat all the swear words & threats his father yelled at him...the memories were so strong he could not hold it, and just had to get it out. I will never forget how a staff member told me to spank my son, and said she would look the other way bc he really needed a whuppin'.
Then I had a Court appt and needed to put my kids in daycare, which cost $50 for the whole day. I was supposed to escrow that money & give it to the Family Place. When I came up short, even though I had a daycare receipt and Court documents to show I was really in court, I was kicked out of the shelter! I could not believe I was thrown out on the street.. again.
It took getting into a Battered Women's Shelter to really make progress and get off the streets. It wasn't easy, but having someone who understands your situation made a HUGE difference.

Hello I have been married for 3years . We have little Boy and I am thinking about leaving. I do not want to make him out to be a bad guy but I am ashamed to talk about this to anyone. I have seen a counselor on my own but they all ask the same thing why do you stay. I used to love him, but he cheated a while ago when I was pregnant , but he treats me like I am the one who wronged him. I ask honey when you come home please hug me or talk to me. He asks me why should I do these things, he gives me dirty looks of disgust. I finally have some selfesteem back after being called fat so many times. I try to hug him or kiss him and he pushes me away. He only calls me when he is out/away but when he is home he never talks to me. I try to make conversation but he treats me like I am stupid. The only way I get money is by pretending I don't care and demanding what I need or want for my baby lot of time I get help from the outside . I have not been kissed when I want to he only sleeps with me when he wants to and as soon as he is done as of like I don't exist . Sorry about the long letter, just tired to fix and make this marriage work but I'm sad unloved disrespected by him and his family and friends God is the only person that gives me love, and doesnt push me away. I want to leave so bad but I'm worried he will take my son from me because I have no where to go.
